Metals, Plastics and Glass", the book is the basic reference for anyone
who likes to make things in their own workshop. A must for the crafts-
person or hobbyist.
Chapdelaine, Chapdelaine, and Hay: THE JOHN W. CAMPBELL LETTERS [ vol. 1 ],

John Campbell, former editor of Astounding SF and past master of common
sense, dispenses his wisdom in letters to writers, friends and
associates.
Chernev, I. and F. Reinfeld: THE FIRESIDE BOOK OF CHESS, Simon & Schuster,
ISBN 0-671-21221-4, $8.95, [out of print].
A lengthy and enjoyable compendium of chess lore. Indeed, just the
thing to curl up in front of the fireplace with.
Fort, Charles: THE BOOK OF THE DAMNED, c. 1919 & 1941, Ace Star Edition #
H-24, approx. 1960, $.60 [out of print].
Fort takes an irreverent and humorous look at orthodox science in this
compilation of over 1,000 strange events that cannot be explained.
Worth reading, if only for the writing style.
Glover, Thomas J.: POCKET REF, Sequoia Publishing, 1995, ISBN 1-885071-00-0,
$9.95.
A handy little (3" x 5-1/2") 544-page reference to an extremely wide
range of information, from science and engineering to everyday useful
stuff, such as an 800-number listing for airlines. Must have!
Goodman, Paul: GROWING UP ABSURD, Random House, ISBN 0-394-70032-5, $4.95.
Adolescent coming of age a couple of generations ago. Goodman was
considered one of our most prominent social critics in the '50's and
'60's, and was an icon of the youth rebellion of the '60's.
Halberstam, David: THE RECKONING, William Morrow & Co., 1986,
ISBN 0-688-04838-2, $19.95.
The inside story of how the Japanese have beaten American industry at
its own game. Fascinating, if frightening reading. Should be mandatory
for all managers and businesspeople.
Hess, Karl and the editors of Survival Tomorrow: A COMMON SENSE STRATEGY FOR
SURVIVALISTS, Kephart Communications, 1981 <out of print, unfortunately>.
An excellent compendium of articles for those anticipating the breakdown
of social institutions. Good even if you don't buy into the survivalist
beliefs. Especially useful for those living in the country.
Kamoroff, Bernard: SMALLTIME OPERATOR, Bell Springs Publishing, 1993, ISBN
0-917510-10-0, $14.95.
A relatively short and upretentious book that tells just about
*everything* necessary about running one's own business or just being
self-employed. Highly recommended.
Lawrence, Michael and John Ozag: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO WINNING SCRABBLE,
Bantam Books, 1987, ISBN 0-553-34306-8, $8.95.
Verily, the best book ever written for serious Scrabble (tm) players.
Lawrence, T.E.: SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM, Penguin, ISBN 0-14-001696-1, $7.95.
Not just for the military historian and strategist, also must reading
for the philosopher or anyone interested in a good story. This is the
true tale of British agent Lawrence, sent in WWI to foment an Arab
uprising against their Ottoman Turk masters. He succeeds beyond all
expectations and learns a few things about life, too.
O'Brien, Geoffrey and S. Wasserstein and H. Morris: THE READER'S CATALOG,

A very comprehensive listing of recommended reading on many, many
topics. A must for the serious bibliophile.
Ostrander, Sheila and Lynn Schroeder: SUPER-LEARNING, Delacorte Press, 1979,
ISBN 0-440-08354-0, $9.95.
Techniques for accelerating learning, improving memory, and developing
the mind's hidden potential.
OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY [compact edition], Oxford University Press, 1971,
LC# 76-188038, $150.
The most complete and detailed of any dictionary. Includes extensive
notes on derivation and word usage. Expensive, but second-hand copies
may be available at used book stores.
READER'S DIGEST FIX-IT-YOURSELF MANUAL, Reader's Digest Assn. Inc., 1977,
ISBN 0-89577-040-7, approx. $24.
The best of the many home "fixit" manuals available. Costs a fair
amount, but will save you many times its purchase price. Includes
everything from plumbing [its simple instructions on unjamming a
disposal saved me a hefty plumber's fee] to appliance and car repair.
Reinfeld, Fred: THE JOYS OF CHESS, Collier Books, 1974, LC #61-12571 [out of
print].
A fun book on various aspects of chess, ranging from explosive
combination play to problems and chess lore.
Scheinwold, Alfred: 5 WEEKS TO WINNING BRIDGE, Pocket Books, 1964,
ISBN 0-671-47214-3, $4.95.
One of the best teaching books on bridge available. A true classic
in its field.
Spengler, Oswald: DER UNTERGANG DES ABENDLANDES [THE DECLINE OF THE WEST]
This massive 2-volume work created the modern outlook on history as
a cyclical process. Deep insights yet understandable. Parts of it
read like a novel.
Strunk and White: THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE, MacMillan, 1979,

The standard reference for writers of books, research papers, reports,
and even lowly memos.
Taylor, Sol: THE STANDARD GUIDE TO THE LINCOLN CENT, Society of Lincoln Cent

The bible for penny collectors.
Thiess, Frank: TSHUSHIMA
[in English translation as VOYAGE OF FORGOTTEN MEN, Bobbs Merrill, 1937].
Story of the grand naval battles of the Russo-Japanese war of 1905
and the rise of Japan as a naval power. Magnificent.
Thucidides [R. Warner translation]: THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR, Penguin,
ISBN 0-14-044039-9, $5.95.
The classic military history of the downfall of Athen's empire in
the war against the rest of the Greek citystates, as told by an actual
participant. Very readable and full of lessons for modern soldiers,
some of which we had to go to Viet Nam to relearn.
Travers, Scott: THE COIN COLLECTOR'S SURVIVAL MANUAL, Arco Publishing,
1984, ISBN 0-668-05695-9, $9.95.
A must read for coin collectors and investors, giving the low-down
on coin market practices from an insider's point of view.
Tripp, C.A., Phd.: THE HOMOSEXUAL MATRIX, New American Library, 1976,
LC# 75-6987, $2.50.
An excellent in-depth study of sexuality in general. Many of the
insights reveal as much about heterosexuals as their homosexual
counterparts..
Tuchmann, Barbara: A DISTANT MIRROR, Ballantine, 1978, ISBN 0-345-34957-1,
$12.95.
Medieval times come alive in this re-creation of the 14th Century
in both historical overview and description of daily life. Very well
done.
THE NEXT WHOLE EARTH CATALOG [second edition], Random House / Point, 1981,
ISBN 0-394-70776-1 [out of print].
The final edition (so far) of this classic compendium of tools and
sources of knowledge. Even more than a decade after publication, still
one of the most useful and enjoyable resources available.
Note that a new edition, THE MILLENNIUM, WHOLE EARTH CATALOG, was
released in 1994, but its quality is *not* up to the standard set by
its predecessors. Get an older edition at a used book store!
